Artist Statement
“Between voice, motion and silence, I search for a form of time-based poetry.”
Ina Viola is an artist working across sculpture, sound, installation, drawing and image. Her practice explores fragile states of perception, translating motion, silence and presence into poetic forms. Through reduction and focus, she draws attention to what is often overlooked.
Music
Music forms an essential part of Ina Viola’s artistic practice. Working with voice, atmosphere and electronic textures, her compositions move between intimacy, rhythm and cinematic space. Many of her pieces emerge from travel, observation and moments of solitude.
Sculpture
In her sculptures and installations, Ina Viola focuses on elemental movements and quiet phenomena, such as the motion of grass, spatial tension or the sensation of being alone. Her works transform familiar structures into fragile reflections on vulnerability, perception and presence.
About
Ina Viola, born in Heidelberg, Germany, lives and works between Berlin and Athens. She studied under sculptor Tony Cragg and completed her Master of Fine Arts at UdK Berlin under Florian Slotawa. During an exchange at the California Institute of the Arts, she studied with artists including Sam Durant, Michael Asher, Marcos Ramirez ERRE and Charles Gaines.
Her practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing, photography and music. Across these media, she reflects on how individual moments and fragile perceptions can exist within an increasingly overloaded and overstimulated contemporary world. By isolating and reframing simple elements, such as movement, silence or solitude, her work draws attention back to what is often lost.
Since 2011, she has also performed with the electronic artist collective TANGOWERK and continues to develop her own sound-based works and collaborations.
